Born in Bolton, Lancashire, England in 1837, Thomas Moran immigrated to American with his family in 1844. Of the 7 children in the family, 4 became well known artists. Thomas excelled with pencil, charcoal, ink, wood engraving, watercolor and oil. By the time he was 21, one of Moran's paintings was exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Largely self-taught, Thomas Moran became a prolific painter of American West landscapes.
